Forensic Structural Engineering

Forensic engineer documenting concrete spalling and structural damage at a Miami property

What Is Forensic Structural Engineering?

Forensic structural engineering is the investigation of why a building or building component failed, leaked or was damaged. ALTEK Engineering’s forensic engineers determine the cause, origin and extent of structural failures, water intrusion, hurricane damage and construction defects, and document their findings in signed and sealed reports for property owners, insurers and attorneys in Florida.

When a structure fails, the cause is rarely obvious and the consequences can be significant. We bring rigorous investigative methodology, diagnostic tools, and decades of structural expertise to every case, and we communicate our findings clearly — whether the audience is a property owner, an insurance adjuster, or a judge.

What Do We Investigate?

  • Water intrusion and leak source identification
  • Structural failure and collapse analysis
  • Roof damage — storm-related and construction defects
  • Hurricane and windstorm damage evaluation
  • Floor tile and floor system damage
  • Wall and facade deterioration
  • Concrete spalling, reinforcement corrosion, and delamination
  • Foundation movement and settlement
  • Construction defects and code violations

How Does a Forensic Investigation Work?

Our engineers conduct field investigations using drones, moisture meters, borescope cameras, and diagnostic instruments. When required, we coordinate material sampling and laboratory testing to confirm our findings. We then apply structural engineering principles, material science, and Florida Building Code analysis to determine the cause, extent, and origin of the defect or failure — delivering a signed and sealed report built to withstand scrutiny from opposing engineers, insurers, and courts.

Who Do We Work With?

  • Property owners and condominium and homeowners associations
  • Insurance companies and third-party claims administrators
  • Plaintiff and defense attorneys
  • General contractors and subcontractors
  • Real estate investors and developers

Forensic Engineering FAQ

What does a forensic structural engineer do?

A forensic structural engineer investigates why a building component failed, leaked or was damaged. The engineer inspects the site, documents evidence, coordinates testing when needed, applies engineering analysis and the building code, and issues a signed and sealed report stating the cause, origin and extent of the damage and the repairs required.

Can you tell whether damage was caused by a hurricane or by long-term deterioration?

Yes. Distinguishing wind or storm damage from pre-existing deterioration, poor workmanship or long-term water intrusion is a core part of our forensic work. We compare the observed damage patterns with the wind event, material condition and construction details, and state our conclusions in a report suitable for insurance claims and litigation.

Do you work for insurance companies or property owners?

Both. ALTEK Engineering is retained by property owners, condominium associations, insurance carriers, adjusters, and plaintiff and defense attorneys. Our role is the same in every case: an objective engineering determination of cause and extent.
